The University of Manchester Innovation Factory (“UoMIF”) is the University of Manchester’s subsidiary responsible for identifying and leading the commercialisation of its innovations and intellectual property.

The University of Manchester is committed to generating world-class innovation that will create major social and economic benefit across the globe. The UoMIF works with academic inventors from the University to identify opportunities that have the potential to create social and economic impact. It then translates these into a form where they can be used by industry and society as a whole. Access to innovations may be created via technology licensing or the formation of spin-out companies. The UoMIF aims to provide a world-class service to academic colleagues and to attract and engage with important external stakeholders including industry; entrepreneurs; licensors and investors; and corporate venture partners.

As part of our objective to become the world’s most effective University Technology Transfer organisation, we are looking to appoint a talented Senior Investment & Licensing Manager to expand our Science & Engineering team.

We are searching for a dynamic entrepreneurial Senior I&L Manager whose core responsibilities will be to develop optimal deal and investment structures aligned with target commercial partners or investors in order to maximise returns for the University, as well as Inventors and  Founders.

You will also maintain regular contact with academic inventors and founders as well as external parties during the commercialisation phases of a project, as well as maintaining good information flow between Operations, the Communications and the Finance, Legal & Portfolio Management Groups to facilitate market awareness, correct valuation of opportunities and support for the identification of potential customers and investors.

The successful candiate will have the ability to develop and maintain a database of national and international organisations and contacts which are sources of investment or potential licensees in the field of Science and Engineering, introducing these contacts to the Information and Digital Communications Group to facilitate targeted marketing campaigns.

You will be responsible for developing the commercial tools (short term visions of the business plans, investment prospectuses, ROI/valuation models, pitch decks, tech data sheets, market analyses and other sales collateral) necessary to transact the opportunities with licensees or investors.

The BD&I group has the responsibility for quantifying the potential value of an opportunity and defining optimal deal structure and terms with the support from the Legal and Financial teams.

Reporting to the Head of I&L for Science & Engineering, this role is also required to continually maintain/update relevant databases of UK and international sources of investment finance as well as developing strong relationships with key investors/potential commercial partners too.

The successful candidate is required to work closely with the academic founders and other internal/external partners, managing relationships to ensure that an opportunity is “deal-ready”.

The candidate must possess a strong background within the field of Science & Engineering, be experienced in deal making and have the ability to create value from innovation and intellectual property.  They will also have proven experience working within a target driven business environment.

A degree in a physical science or engineering related subject or similar level 6 qualification (England, Wales and N.Ireland Qualification levels) or equivalent is essential for this role.  A post graduate qualification in a scientific business-related discipline would be advantageous.

This is an exciting time to join the UoMIF as we strive to become the number one University Technology Transfer organisation. As such, we are offering an excellent salary and benefits as well as a genuine opportunity to develop your skills and career within a globally respected organisation.
