A consortium of Universities of Cambridge, Manchester, UCL and the Henry Royce Institute for advanced materials research and innovation are working together to accelerate the adoption of advanced ‘energy materials’ by UK industry.  Energy materials are new technologies that will be essential to ensure the UK achieves its carbon net-zero goals. This includes materials for battery or fuel cell technologies, exploitation of renewable energy resources, light-weighting materials, managing heat reduction or energy loss, or increasing energy efficiency of modern processes.

To bridge the gap between current materials research and their use by industry, the consortium will attract £100m of funding from private and public sector sources.  A combined panel of experts from industry and the consortium will select the projects which will have the greatest impact in creating a net-zero economy and create the most attractive commercial opportunities for UK industry.  The funding will speed the development of product demonstrators to facilitate early adoption of these technologies.

The consortium wishes to appoint a Senior Advisor, on a 12 month part-time basis, to lead the development of this exciting initiative. This leadership role will require the individual to:

  • Develop and shape the consortium’s proposition to align with the needs of both the private and public sector stakeholders and the academic researchers who will apply to the programme.
  • Engage with senior directors & managers in government and industry to understand their future requirements for energy materials.
  • Gain private and public sector support for EMIT and secure commitment from these stake holders to invest in the programme.

The Senior Advisor must be passionately committed to supporting the UK’s zero-carbon agenda. Persuasive and articulate, they will communicate the importance of why these materials need to be adopted by industry.  They will understand the technical, operational, legal, and commercial challenges involved in translating new materials into new products and processes.  To do this will require an individual who has the gravitas to operate and influence strategy at senior levels across industry, academia, and government.

An industry analysist/project administrator will also be appointed by the EMIT consortium to provide support for the Senior Advisor.
